Obituary: German Designer Gabriele Jaenecke Dies, Aged 68

On October 28, 2020, German designer Gabriele Jaenecke passed away at the age of 68. She is remembered as one of Germany’s leading set and costume designers, having worked on over 150 productions throughout her career.

Jaenecke grew up in the city of Heidelberg, and studied stage design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where she completed her assistantship under Jurgen Rose.

In 1979 she became a freelancer, and went on to design for work on stages in Germany and abroad.

She worked with directors such as Andreas Homoki, Johannes Schaaf, Ludger Engles, and Nadja Loschky. Since 1992, Jaenecke has held several teaching positions among schools such as the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin, and the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art.

She worked at such companies as the Oper Leipzig, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Teater Bonn, and Oper Graz, among others.
