
Obituary: Former Metropolitan Opera General Director Bruce Crawford Dies at 96
By Francisco SalazarBruce Crawford, Former Chairman and CEO of the Board of the Metropolitan Opera, as well as the company’s 14th General Manager, has died.
Crawford joined the Met Board as an Advisory Director in 1976 and served as a Managing Director from 1977 to 2008. He was then the president from 1984 to 1985 and President and CEO from 1991 to 1999.
From 1985 to 1989, he became the Met’s General Manager, suspending his career as an executive at the Omnicom Group. He was only the second Board member in Met history to serve as General Manager.
He was known for balancing the attention given to star singers like Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo and was also a generous donor.
Following his tenure as General Manager, Crawford continued to work with the Met as Chairman of the Executive Committee from 1990 to 1991 and again from 2005 to 2008. He later served as Honorary Chairman and Chairman Emeritus in between those tenures.
