Obituary: Former Canadian Opera Company Artistic Administrator Philip Boswell Dies at 75

The Canadian Opera Company has announced that on Nov. 8, 2024, Philip Boswell died at the age of 75.

The company took to social media and said, “With heavy hearts, we share the sad news of the passing of Philip Boswell, a cherished member of the Canadian Opera Company family. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends and invite you to join us in celebrating Philip’s extraordinary life and legacy.”

Boswell was born on April 27, 1949, in Paris, France, and lived in Paris, Rome, Milan, and Washington, DC. He graduated from Harvard University in 1970 and went on to pursue opera.

He first took on summer jobs at the Santa Fe Opera (1969-70) and Spoleto’s Festival dei Due Mondi (1971-73). Later he went on to work with the Opera Company of Boston (1971-73), the San Francisco Opera’s Western Opera Theater (1974-78), and the Canadian Opera Company (1978-2011).

It was with the Canadian Opera Company where he left a mark. He served as an Artistic Administrator and Senior Artistic Advisor with the company working alongside directors Lotfi Mansouri and Richard Bradshaw.
