Obituary: Conductor Víctor Eloy López Cerezo Dies 43

Conductor Víctor Eloy López Cerezo has died at the age of 43.

According to reports, the conductor died in his hometown in Malaga due to cancer he had been battling for a year.

Born in Malaga, the conductor went on to study Music History and Sciences and obtained a diploma in Musical Teaching, a Master in Spanish Musical Heritage and a Master in Cultural Management.

López Cerezo trained in orchestral conducting with teachers Miguel Romea and José María Moreno and was assistant of Karel Mark Chichon, Rune Bergmann, Arturo Diez Boscovich, Alberto Veronesi, and José María Moreno. He went on to become a rising star having performed at the Teatro Real in Madrid, Málaga Philharmonic and the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra.

He was the Principal conductor of the Spanish Philharmonic Orchestra and the Andalusian Symphony Orchestra and conducted such ensembles as Vienna Chamber Orchestra (Austria), Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra, Filharmonia Szczecin Orchestra (Poland), Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra, Malaga Symphony Orchestra, Classical of Granada, National Band of Cuba and Municipal Band of Palma de Mallorca, among other professional groups.

He also conducted at the Vienna Konzerthaus (Austria), Victoria Hall (Geneva, Switzerland), Stravinski Auditorium (Montreux, Switzerland), Malmö Concert Hall (Sweden), Gran Teatro del Liceo (Barcelona), Wizink Center, and Bilbao Arena.

López Cerezo was also known for his zarzuela repertoire, directing more than 300 performances, including “Luisa Fernanda”, “Marina”, “Barberillo de Lavapies” and “La Corte del Faraón.”
