Obituary: Conductor Raymond Dobbs Frank Dies at 90

Conductor Raymond Dobbs Franks has died at the age of 90.

Born in 1933, he went on to study at the Juilliard School of Music and went on to work with the New Zealand Opera Company in the 1960s. That led him to work with numerous Australian companies such as the Australian Opera Studio, West Australian Ballet, Chamber Made Opera, Australian Opera, and Lyric Opera of Queensland, among others.

Dobbs Franks would also conduct in Japan and Italy and in 2012, he was appointed Coordinator of the Classical Voice program at Monash University, Melbourne.

During his career, he conducted an extensive amount of opera, including works by Mozart, Bucci, Menotti, Verdi, Poulenc, Rossini, and Stravinsky.

Dobbs Franks also made numerous recordings of such works as Verdi’s ” Nabucco” and “Falstaff,” and Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.”
