
Obituary: Conductor Daniel Lipton Dies at 84

Born in Paris, the conductor grew up in New York but eventually returned to his city of birth for his studies.
He went on to work in Denver, Florence, Houston, and Zurich. He later became the chief conductor of the Orquesta Sinfonica de Colombia in Colombia from 1975 to 1983 and later founded the Ballet National and the Opera de Colombia in Bogotà, of which he was artistic director and chief conductor.
Additionally, Lipton served as the Music Director of the Anhaltisches Theater Dessaufrom 1992-1995, Artistic Director of the San Antonio Festival, and Artistic Director of Opera Ontario.
In 2012, he was appointed Chief Conductor of Opera Tampa and surprised resigned in 2017. At the time he said, “I have truly loved being a part of the Opera Tampa family these past five years and look forward to many more opportunities in the future. I am very fortunate and honored to have followed in Maestro Coppola’s footsteps and feel that I have furthered his legacy during my time here.”
It was later reported in 2018 that he had been accused of sexual assault.
According to reports, Lipton died in Florida.
