Obituary: Artistic Director Luciano Alberto Dies

Musicologist, critic, and artistic director Luciano Alberti died on Jan. 11, 2025 in Florence. He was 93-years-old.

Alberti was a teacher of music at the Università di Siena and published numerous writings about the performing arts.

He was also the Artistic Director of the Teatro Comunale di Firenze and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino as well as at the Accademia Chigiana di Siena and Settimana Musicale Senese. He worked for 10 years in Florence and 19 in Siena and brought new premieres to the cities as well as historic productions. Additionally, he oversaw the operatic debuts of such directors as Roberto De Simone, Luigi Janko, Ermanno Olmi, Franco Piavoli, Mario Monicelli, Antoine Vitez and Ken Russell. He was also in charge of bringing Franco Zeiffrelli’s “La Traviata” to Florence under the direction of Carlos Kleiber.

Alberti also worked with the Scuola della Scala al Festival Puccini di Torre del Lago and organized a Chinese tour for Luciano Pavarotti and the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova. He also contributed to the celebration of Gaetano Donizetti in 1997 and 1998 and helped rediscover critical editions of the composer’s work.

In 2013, Alberti published a personal book entitled “La giovinezza sommersa di un compositore: Luigi Dallapiccola.”
