Oberlin Conservatory Presents Virtual Performance of Beethoven’s ‘Choral Fantasy’

By David Salazar

Oberlin Conservatory has released a performance of Beethoven’s famed “Choral Fantasy” online as part of the 250th-anniversary celebration of the iconic composer’s birth.

The digital and socially-distanced performance took place on Dec. 15, 2020 and featured artists performing from their homes world-wide. Among the soloists were soprano Cailtin Aloia, soprano Julia Dawson, mezzo-soprano Rebecca Printz, tenor Carlos Santelli, tenor Daniel McGrew, and baritone Elliott Hines.

The showcase was led by pianist Peter Takács and also featured the Verona Quartet, the Oberlin Conservatory’s Quartet-in-Residence. Also performing was a virtual choir of over 60 Oberlin students, faculty, parents, staff, and non-Oberlin musicians from around the world.

The performance was edited and produced by Tiffany Chang, the orchestra conductor of the Oberlin Arts and Sciences Orchestra, which also performed alongside the University of Rochester Orchestras and Chamber Singers.

“This collaboration was a direct result of collegiality developed via the 2019 Hart Institute at The Dallas Opera, where I was a participant conductor and where I met the collaborating conductor from U. of Rochester, Rachel Waddell,” Chang told OperaWire in an email statement. “It was a technological feat that resulted in a compelling production that clearly speaks to the power of art in these COVID times.”
