By David Salazar

NYU Skirball will present the world premiere of Ethan Philbrick’s “The Conquest of Bread” on May 1, 2025.

The work is inspired by Peter Kropotkin’s 1892 critique of capitalism and showcases four vocal ensembles including a quartet of opera singers including Gelsey Bell, Hai-ting Chinn, Catherine Brookman and  Lukas Papenfusscline (aka “leiken”); a trio of performance artists including mayfield brooks, Jennifer Miller and Anh Vo.; the community chorus Sing in Solidarity; and an ensemble of fifth to ninth grade singers.

Philbrick is a cellist, performance artist, and writer whose focus is on the intersection between musical performance art and abolitionist politics.

The showcase kicks off at 7:30 and is free to the general public.

NYU Skirball’s programs are made possible in part with support from the National Endowment for the Arts; the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature; and the Howard Gilman Foundation; Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels; Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater; Collins Building Services; Villa Albertine; Goethe Institut; Polish Cultural Institute; General Delegation of the Government of Flanders to the USA; Austrian Consulate General New York; and Marta Heflin Foundation; as well as our valued donors through memberships, commissioning, and Allies for ArtsAccess Fund support.
