Nino Machaidze & Luciano Ganci Lead Radio Broadcast of ‘Giovanna d’Arco’ from the Teatro Regio di Parma
By Francisco SalazarRai Radio 3 is set to broadcast Verdi’s “Giovanna d’Arco” on May 10, 2025.
The performance from the Teatro Regio di Parma stars Luciano Ganci as Carlo VII, Nino Machaidze as Giovanna, Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar as Giacomo, and Krzysztof Bączyk as Talbot.
Michele Gamba, who made his Teatro Regio di Parma debut, conducted a critical edition by Alberto Rizzuti.
In a statement Gamba said, “The more I explored the score of ‘Giovanna d’Arco,’ the more I was fascinated by the fact that I could verify more and more how the young Verdi was not a rude and crude musician as he was considered for a long time, but revealed refinements of texture and interest in harmonic color. And then I was very involved in the component of mysticism in this phase of Verdi’s career. It really seems to me that Verdi here shows himself to be very aware of what he was doing and in full control of his expressive means. I mean that, despite the widespread ideas about Verdi’s theatrical music of the 1940s and despite the characters and the setting, here we are faced with a work that we could define as chamber music.
The production, which was directed by Emma Dante, was streamed on OperaVision two months ago.
