Opera Columbus and CAPA have announced that Columbus native, entertainer, actor, and drag icon Nina West will star as Ruth in “Pirates!,” a fresh new take on Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance” by Rupert Holmes.

West is known to audiences across the country for her appearances on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Broadway’s “Hairspray,” and numerous television and film projects.

In a statement, General Director & CEO Julia Noulin-Mérat said, “We are delighted to welcome Nina West to the Opera Columbus stage. Nina is a remarkable performer, storyteller, and advocate whose artistry and connection with audiences make her the perfect Ruth. Her participation reflects our commitment to creating joyful, accessible experiences that bring new audiences into the world of opera and musical theatre.”

“Pirates!” is a collaboration between Opera Columbus and CAPA and will be presented at the historic Palace Theatre in November 2026 as part of the theatre’s 100th Anniversary celebration. Additional casting and creative team announcements will be released in the coming months.
