Beginning in Autumn 2026, Australian conductor Nicholas Carter will become General Music Director of Staatsoper Stuttgart and Staatsorchester Stuttgart.

Carter is currently the Chief Conductor and Co-Opera Director of Bühnen Bern, a position he has held since 2021. Earlier this year, he conducted performances of “Das Rheingold” at Staatsoper Stuttgart and will take over the musical direction of a new production of Prokofiev’s “Der Spieler” in February 2025.

‘Nicholas Carter brings not only his expertise as a Wagner and Strauss conductor to Stuttgart, but is also at home in contemporary music: he was responsible for the acclaimed American premiere of Brett Dean’s opera Hamlet at Metropolitan Opera New York and has also acquired international profile as a concert conductor. Nicholas Carter is a team player through and through – we are looking forward to working with him!’ says Intendant Viktor Schoner in a press release.

The Board of Directors of Württembergische Staatstheater Stuttgart still has to confirm the appointment on Nov. 18.
