New York Philharmonic President & CEO Resigns
By Francisco SalazarOn Thursday, July 11, 2024, Gary Ginstling, the New York Philharmonic’s president and chief executive resigned.
The resignation came as a surprise as he had been on the job for a year.
In a statement, Ginstling said, “The New York Philharmonic is an extraordinary institution, and it has been an honor to be a part of it. However, it has become clear to me that the institution needs a different type of leadership, and I have tendered my resignation.”
Ginstling took over the orchestra last year and saw the ensemble contract Gustavo Dudamel as the next Music Director. He also saw attendance stronger than those of many other orchestras and the orchestra received a $40 million gift.
The orchestra is in the middle of an investigation into its workplace culture after two players were suspended after accusations of misconduct and the orchestra’s musicians and the administration are in the midst of talks over a new labor contract. The orchestra will also not have a Music Director until 2026 as Jaap van Zweden’s six-year tenure comes to an end this summer.
