New York Department of Cultural Affairs Set for Major Reduction in Next Fiscal Year

New York’s Department of Cultural Affairs could see a major reduction from New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio’s Executive budget this coming fiscal year.

Per the budget, the department is set to allocate $137 million, a reduction of $10.6 million from the preliminary budget originally envisioned back in January.

During the previous fiscal year, the Department of Cultural Affairs received $212 million, which was the largest sum it has received in the agency’s history; New York City’s budget for cultural affairs is undoubtedly the largest in the city.

A vote on the budget proposals is set to take place on June 30, 2020.

Arts Institutions have been among the hardest hit during the COVID-19 crisis with the Metropolitan Opera expected to lose around $60 million from canceled performances; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is has been earmarked for $17.87 million in New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio’s Executive budget, is expected to lose over $100 million.

Moreover, in a recent speech, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio noted that he would cancel all public events in June, which will undoubtedly continue providing a major blow to arts institutions.
