By Francisco Salazar

New York City Opera has announced that it will produce the world premiere of the award-winning jazz composer/pianist Ted Rosenthal’s “Dear Erich.”

The new Jazz opera will be co-produced with the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene at the Museum of Jewish Heritage and will open on Jan. 9, 2019.

The new opera tells the true story of tragedy, love, and redemption and represents the first of two world premieres which will be presented this season by New York City Opera. The second will be Iain Bell’s “Stonewall,” which will be presented in June.

“Dear Erich” will be directed by Mikhaela Mahony, with a libretto by Lesley Rosenthal and Ted Rosenthal and will star Jessica Tyler Wright, Glenn Seven Allen, Rachel Zatcoff, and Peter Kendall Clark. The opera will also feature set design by John Farrell, costume design by Janet O’Neill, and lighting design by Susan Roth.

Performances run through Jan 13 and will be performed four times.
