
New Wave Opera to Spotlight Marie Curie & Alice Tierney in ‘Atoms & Artifacts’
By David SalazarPortland’s New Wave Opera is set to present a unique double bill, “Atoms & Artifacts,” this September.
First up is the West Coast premiere of “Marie Curie Learns to Swim.” The opera by Jessica Rudman and Kendra Preston Leonard had its world premiere in 2018 and recounts the story of the famed scientist through a series of flashbacks and dialogues with her daughter Irène during a seaside vacation in 1926.
The opera will star Lisa Neher as Marie Curie with Alishia Garcia as Young Marie, Lindsey Rae Johnson as Irène, and Dan Gibbs as Pierre Curie. Jeffrey Puuka directs the production, and Stephen Lewis conducts.
The opera is paired with Melissa Dunphy and Jacqueline Goldfinger’s “Alice Tierney,” which spotlights a team of archeology students excavating the home of 1800s murder victim Alice Tierney.
The operas will take the stage of Mago Hunt Recital Hall at the University of Portland with performances on Sept. 19 and 20 starting at 7:30 p.m. and the final show on the 21s,t getting a 2 p.m. start time.
