Chicago City Opera to Showcase ‘Carmen’

By David Salazar

Chicago City Opera is set to open its new season with a production of “Carmen” at the Horatio N. May Chapel in Rosehill Cemetery.

Set for Oct. 3 and 4, 2025, the performances of the famed Bizet masterwork will star Angela Born in the title role and Jordan Loyd as Don José. Joining them are Keaton Payne, Jessie Lyons, Diana Monacelli, Jaime Sharp, Louise Floyd, Matthew Peckham, Kevin Wheatle, and pianist Jordan Crice. Alexandra Enyart conducts, and Rosse Freeman directs.

“’Carmen’ is the third most frequently performed opera in the United States this century, and with good reason,” said Enyart, also Artistic Director of Chicago City Opera, per an official press release. “Its tuneful melodies have been used in everything from Saturday morning cartoons, to Olympic figure skating routines, to car ads, but nothing beats hearing this gorgeous music in its original context.”
