New Latin Wave & National Sawdust to Present Natasha Tiniacos & Sokio’s ‘Paraíso’

New Latin Wave and National Sawdust in New York City will present “Paraíso” on June 16, 2023.

The experimental chamber opera tells the story of a mother and her child from Puebla, Mexico, who cross the U.S./Mexico border to join her husband in New York City.

The opera is written by Venezuelan poet, scholar, and educator Natasha Tiniacos and features music by Sokio, who has composed other operas such as “Patria,” “Tántalo,” “Arequipa,” and “Rei.”

Performers and creative collaborators include stefa marin Alarcon, Melisa Bonetti, Raquel Acevedo Klein, Brandon Lopez, Shayna Dunkelman, Andrea Wolf, Lucia Cuba, Adele Fournet, and Amanda Riesman.

New Latin Wave is a multidisciplinary platform for Latinx arts and culture that aims to foster conversations about Latinx contributions and identity in the US.

The performance will commence at 8 p.m. local time.
