Nathan Felix Launches Opera Austin Festival

By Afton Wooten

Austin native composer Nathan Felix has launched the Opera Austin Festival, a one-night-only event for new operas written in Central Texas.

The Opera Austin Festival spotlights original works and arias currently being written and those written in the last three to five years by living composers. The festival joins forces with local and regional opera organizations, composers, and singers including LOLA, One Ounce Opera, composer Peter Stopchinski, Nathan Felix Opera Productions, and Inversion Ensemble, who will curate their programming or project under the festival umbrella. A secondary stage will feature arias sung by young artists, and a conference room will allow composers and organizations to discuss the works being presented.

In a press release, it was stated that “The festival invites multiple points of view to emphasize inclusivity and diversity in all its forms and to create a program that is meaningful to the local community, comprising Austin and the state of Texas at large. Austin has a rich history rooted in blues, roots music, Americana and live music but more importantly, it is home to musical experimentation and Opera Austin Festival seeks to foster this sentiment by showcasing contributions to new opera music and dream of new ways the community can come together to celebrate the exploration and experimentation which makes Austin so deeply unique.”

KMFA serves as the media sponsor and host. The full roster of participants will be announced later this year, including information on tickets for the festival. The festival is set to take place Nov. 16 at KMFA’s Draylen Mason Music Studio.
