The Staatsoper Unter den Linden will transform Berlin’s historic Bebelplatz into a free open-air stage on May 23 and 24 as “Staatsoper für alle” returns for its 20th edition.

The weekend opens on Saturday, May 23 with a live transmission of Giuseppe Verdi’s “Nabucco,” conducted by Francesco Lanzillotta and staged by Emma Dante. The cast features baritone Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar, bass Tareq Nazmi, and mezzo-soprano Elena Maximova and soprano Lidia Fridman, among others, with the Staatsopernchor and Staatskapelle Berlin.

Sunday’s program begins at 11:30 a.m. with a family-oriented open-air concert by the Opernkinderorchester and the Jugendchor der Staatsoper Unter den Linden, conducted by Giuseppe Mentuccia. The showcase features music by Offenbach, Gounod, and Massenet.

The festival closes at 1 p.m. on Sunday with a Staatskapelle Berlin concert under Generalmusikdirektor Christian Thielemann, who leads an all-Beethoven program.
