Music of Remembrance to Present ‘Stormy Seas’

By David Salazar

Music of Remembrance will present “Stormy Seas” on Dec. 13, 2020.

The showcase will feature the world premiere of Iranian-American composer Sahba Aminikla’s “Stormy Seas,” a work that is inspired by true stories of young people who “braved the peril of setting sail in search of safe shores.” The stories examine refugees of Nazi Germany, communist Cuba, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and the Ivory Coast. It also features two Ladino songs as well as music by Dutch composers Dick Kattenburg, Géza Frid, and Max Vrendenburg.

Among the performers involved in the concert are baritone José Rubio and mezzo-soprano Karen Early Evans.

“At a time when the pandemic has sent us on a voyage that none of us could have expected,” Artistic Director Miller stated in a press release. “Our season’s theme is also one of journeys: journeys in search of safety and freedom, of identity, of hope in the face of daunting odds, and odysseys to new lives in new lands. Remembering these stories strengthens our resolve to prevent human tragedies from happening again.”

Audiences can continue to stream the event until Dec. 27, 2020 via the company’s official website.
