Music of Remembrance Free Concert ‘Art From Ashes’

By Afton Wooten

Music of Remembrance (MOR) will mark the International Holocaust Day of Remembrance with a free concert on Jan. 23, 2022.

The “Art from Ashes” concert continues the group’s annual tradition of honoring the musicians and artists that were involved in the Holocaust for the anniversary of the Auschwitz liberation.

The chamber ensemble features members of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, recipients of the 2021 David Tonkonogui Memorial Award for Young Artists violinist Tokuji Miyasaka and cellist Leyna Kitahama, mezzo-soprano Sarah Larsen, and pianist and MOR’s Artistic Director Mina Miller. The setlist includes works by Gideon Klein, Pavel Haas, Dick Kattenburg, James Simon, Viktor Ullmann, Carlo Taube, Ilse Weber, as well as two rarely performed tangos written by prisoners in Auschwitz and Buchenwald.

The concert can be viewed on Jan. 23 at 12 p.m. PST and on-demand for one week following the event via the company’s official website.
