Munich Philharmonic Cancels ‘Buddha Passion’

By Francisco Salazar

The Munich Philharmonic has canceled its upcoming performance of Tan Dun’s “Buddha Passion.”

The orchestra noted, that “due to ongoing travel restrictions and quarantine regulations when traveling from or to the People’s Republic of China, we must, unfortunately, postpone the performance of Tan Dun’s “Buddha Passion.” The special instrumentation required for the work, with indigenous singers and traditional Chinese instruments, make it impossible to realize the project under the existing restrictions.”

As a result, the company has announced that “the concert on May 1, 2022, has been canceled without replacement. Tugan Sokhiev will instead join the orchestra on April 30 to conduct a special concert. On the program are Aram Khachaturian’s Flute Concerto with solo flutist Michael Martin Kofler, and Symphony No. 4 by Johannes Brahms. Tickets already purchased for May 1 can be returned via München Ticket or transferred to April 30.”
