Morris Robinson Receives ‘Diversity & Inclusion’ Certification from Cornell University

By Francisco Salazar

Morris Robinson has graduated with a Certification from Cornell University.

The bass, who has served on panels, contributed to editorials, written and edited statements since racial tensions arose in the United States, graduated with a certificate in Diversity and Inclusion.

In a statement, the bass said, “I have recently been thrust/capitulated into the realm of being a spokesman for racial inequities in our world, and more specifically, our Opera World. I have always been one who values preparation, education, sincerity, integrity and validity. In as much, I often found myself questioning my very own expertise on this matter regarding things to which my expertise was limited to the pigment of my skin, and the life experiences I’ve obtained related thereto. Although my life experiences are indeed a valuable resource, I feel like having a formal education in this discipline will better position me to offer more informed and strategic information to the Companies that I currently advise and others who seek advice in areas of diversity and conclusion.”

Throughout his certification, Robinson took four two-week courses that included “Improving Engagement,” “Fostering and Inclusive Climate,” “Diversity and Inclusion at Work,” and “Counteracting Unconscious Bias.”

Since lockdown, Robinson has engaged in many panels revolving around the discussion of racial equality in opera with such organizations as the Los Angeles Opera, UIA Talent Agency, and a masterclass led by soprano Lisette Oropesa. The bass is set to be a judge for the Tri-Cities Opera Virtual Vocal competition and headlines The Atlanta Opera’s revamped 2020-21 season.
