The Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition will take place in Turku from June 7-17, 2027.
This marks the first time that the competition, which now takes place once every three years, will be held outside of Helsinki. The first round will be held at Sigyn Hall, with semifinals set for the chamber music hall and the finals headed to Music Hall Fuuga. During the finals, John Stordgård will conduct the finalists alongside the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra.
“Turku is blazing the trail as a city that promotes and invests in cultural events. We want to play a part in building an international music programme in Turku. The finalists of the Mirjam Helin Competition are among the top talents of the future, and we want to give them the opportunity to perform in the brand-new Music Hall Fuuga,” said Susanna Pettersson, CEO of the Finnish Cultural Foundation, per an official press release.
There will be approximately €200,000 in cash prizes and scholarships awarded, with the winner receiving a sum of €60,000, one of the largest prizes for any international classical singing competition.
In addition to the big news, the organization announced that mezzo-soprano Jingjing Xu, the 2024 competition winner, will perform at the Turku Music Festival on August 22, 2025.
The Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition was founded in 1984. Among the major prize winners over the years are Olaf Bär, Elīna Garanča, René Pape, Andrea Rost, Vladimir Chernov, and Julia Lezhneva.
