Michael Spyres & Chevalier Lead New CD/DVD Releases

By Francisco Salazar

This week audiences will get a chance to hear a soundtrack from an anticipated film and the new album from one of the most interesting tenors in the industry.

Ariadne auf Naxos

Dynamic releases Strauss’ work in a production by Matthias Hartmann. The Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is led by Daniele Gatti and production from Florence stars Krassimira Stoyanova (Primadonna/Ariadne), Sophie Koch (Der Komponist), Jessica Pratt (Zerbinetta), and AJ Glueckert (Der Tenor/Bacchus).

Chevalier

Hollywood Records releases the Chevalier (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) with an original score by Kris Bowers. Included on the album are on-camera performance tracks produced and arranged by Michael Abels, and songs composed by Joseph Bologne, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Alessandro Scarlatti.

On Clear Day

Chanticleer expands its discography with “On a Clear Day.” Platoon releases the album which showcases premiere studio recordings of music commissioned by and arranged for the choir over the past two decades, together with other favorites. One of the featured works is by Chanticleer’s 2022-23 Composer-in-Residence, Ayanna Woods.

Contra-Tenor

Michael Spyres releases his latest album on Warner Classics and challenges perceptions of the tenor in the Baroque era, often seen as the age of the castrato. In the company of Il Pomo d’Oro and conductor Francesco Corti, he explores the period from the late 17th century to the 1770s, tracing the course of opera in both the French and Italian styles. The 15 arias range from Lully to early Mozart by way of Händel, Vivaldi, Rameau, Gluck and composers such as Hasse, Galuppi and Latilla (represented by world premiere recordings), and Mazzoni and Sarro (represented by first studio recordings).
