Doris Soffel to Celebrate 100th Opera Role

On Oct. 24, 2021, German mezzo-soprano Doris Soffel will celebrate her 100th opera role.

Soffel will sing the role of “Staraya Barynya” in Shostakovich’s “The Nose” at the Bayerische Staatsoper in a new production by Kirill Serebrennikov.

Vladimir Jurowski will conduct the production which is set to star Boris Pinkhasovich, Sergei Leiferkus, Laura Aikin, Andrey Popov, Sergey Skorokhodov, Anton Rositskiy, Sean Michael Plumb, and Gennady Bezzubenkov.

Soffel began her career in the 70s and has performed roles from Verdi, Wagner, Bartok, Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini. She sang world premieres by contemporary composers like Aribert Reimann and Krysztof Penderecki. The mezzo has also performed at the Bayreuth Festival, Royal Swedish Opera, Stuttgart State Opera, Royal Opera, and others.

“The Nose” opens on Oct. 24 and is set to run until Nov. 5. It will return in the summer for the Munich Opera Festival.
