Metropolitan Opera Live in HD 2019-20 Preview: Peter Mattei & Elza van den Heever Star in ‘Wozzeck’

The Met Opera’s Live in HD series for the 2019-20 season continues this Saturday, Jan. 11, 2019 with a transmission of Alban Berg’s “Wozzeck.”

The broadcast, which kicks off 12:55 p.m. Eastern time and is set to end before 3 p.m. local time. It will star Peter Mattei in the titular role with Elza van den Heever as Marie, Gerhard Siegel as the Captain, Christopher Ventris as the Drum Major, Christian Van Horn as the Doctor, Tamara Mumford as Margret, and Andrew Staples as Andrés.

Of the opening night performance of this production, OperaWire’s review placed a spotlight on Elza van den Heever’s performance, noting that she was the emotional core of the night and “managed to portray a character full of complexity and contradiction.”

This is the fifth Live in HD transmission of the season. It will be followed by “Porgy and Bess” on Feb. 1, “Agrippina” on Feb. 29, “Der Fliegende Holländer” on March 14, “Tosca” on April 11, and “Maria Stuarda” on May 9, 2020.
