Metropolitan Opera Brings Back Historic ‘Magic Flute’ Performance to Cinemas This December

The Metropolitan Opera’s first-ever high-definition cinema transmission, Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” is headed back to cinemas this holiday season.

The performance, which originally aired on Dec. 30, 2006 and will head to screens in U.S. cinemas on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025 with international dates varying in locations including Canada, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, and more.

This abridged, English-language production features Tony Award–winner Julie Taymor’s acclaimed staging, with Taymor also designing the costumes and co-designing the puppetry. The cast includes Matthew Polenzani as Tamino, Ying Huang as Pamina, Nathan Gunn as Papageno, Erika Miklósa as the Queen of the Night, and René Pape as Sarastro.

The creative team also features set designer George Tsypin, lighting designer Donald Holder, co-puppet designer Michael Curry, choreographer Mark Dendy, and English adaptation by poet and librettist J. D. McClatchy.

“The Met: Live in HD Series” continues on Dec. 13, 2025, with “Andrea Chénier” and then on Jan. 10, 2026, with “I Puritani.”
