
Metropolitan Opera Announces New Productions for 2026, 2027, & 2028
By Francisco SalazarFollowing the announcement of the 2025-26 season, the Metropolitan Opera has announced future plans for 2026, 2027, and 2028.
According to Associated Press, the upcoming productions include Huang Ruo’s “The Wedding Banquet,” which will open the 2027-28 season. The previously announced opera is based on the 1993 film. There will be a remake of the film set to be released later this month.
The 2026-27 season will see Carlos Simon’s “In the Rush,” which was renamed from its original title “The Highlands.”
The company is also set to present a new production of Weill’s “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” by Ivo Van Hove’s and a new production of Händel’s “Semele” by Claus Guth. Both operas will be performed during the 2027-28 season.
The company also revealed that it is set to present new productions of Händel’s “Alcina” by Richard Jones, Händel’s “Ariodante” by Robert Carsen, and Mussorgsky’s “Khovanshchina” by Simon McBurney.
Finally, the company has canceled Kevin Newbury’s staging of Donizetti’s “La Favorite,”which was originally produced at the Houston Grand Opera. Meanwhile, Barrie Kosky’s production of Prokofiev’s “The Fiery Angel” remains on hold.
