The Metropolitan Opera has announced a cast change for the opening performance of “Moby Dick.”

The company revealed that Peter Mattei has withdrawn due to illness. In his stead, the role of Starbuck will be sung by Thomas Glass, who previously won the Grand Finals of the National Council Auditions in 2019, singing Starbuck’s aria “Captain Ahab? I must speak with you.” His company debut came in 2022 in “Madama Butterfly” and most recently, he appeared in the 2023 Summer Recital Series.

In addition to his Met performances, Glass has appeared with Atlanta Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Arizona Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, and Houston Grand Opera.

Mattei is expected to return for the March 8 performance of “Moby Dick.”
