Metropolitan Opera Announces Cast Change for ‘Norma’

By Francisco Salazar

The Metropolitan Opera has announced a cast change for its production of “Norma” on March 17.

The company said that Angela Meade will sing the title role of Bellini’s masterpiece replacing Sonya Yoncheva.

Meade performed the title role in David McVicar’s production back in 2017. She has also performed the opera at the LA Opera.

The cast change comes days after Yoncheva criticized the New York Times for a review that compared her to Angel Blue. The soprano was also vocal about the online bullying she and her family had received.

Meade joins a cast that includes Michael Spyres, Ekaterina Gubanova, and Christian Van Horn.

Yoncheva is still scheduled to sing the remaining performances on March 22 and 25 (matinee).
