Metropolitan Opera Announces Cast Change for ‘Die Frau Ohne Schatten’

By Francisco Salazar

The Metropolitan Opera has announced a cast change for its Dec. 7 performance of “Die Frau ohne Schatten.”

The company said, “For today’s performance of Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten, the role of the Emperor will be sung by Issachah Savage.” Savage will replace the originally scheduled Russell Thomas.

Savage made his Met debut in 2015 as Don Riccardo in “Ernani.” He returned in 2022 as the High Priest in “Idomeneo.” The tenor has performed at the LA Opera, Seattle Opera, Opéra National de Bordeaux, Houston Grand Opera, and Canadian Opera Company. He first sang the Emperor in “Die Frau ohne Schatten” during the 2023-24 season at the Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse.

Savage is set to join a cast that includes Elza van den Heever, Lise Lindstrom, Nina Stemme, Michael Volle, and Ryan Speedo Green. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts.

Thomas returns to the production on Dec. 10.
