Beth Morrison Projects Announces ‘BMP: SONGBOOK Collection’
By Afton MarkayBeth Morrison Projects has released “BMP: SONGBOOK Collection,” which includes an Anthology of Arias, an Illustrated History, as well as CD/Digital Recordings.
“The Anthology” offers over 60 arias by today’s leading composers of contemporary opera and music-theatre. Many pieces included are being offered publicly in this format for the first time. Each aria is presented in an arrangement for voice and piano, along with contextual information about the original production in which the aria appeared. Featured composers include Juhi Bansal, Timur Bekbosunov, Daniel Corral, Mohammed Fairouz, Garrett Fisher, Michael Gordon, Ricky Ian Gordon, Ted Hearne, Peter Hilliard, Molly Joyce, Mary Kouyoumdjian, David Lang, David T. Little, Keeril Makan, Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, Emma O’Halloran, Paola Prestini, Ellen Reid, Huang Ruo, Kamala Sankaram, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Tamar-kali, and Du Yun.
“BMP: SONGBOOK Volume I & Volume II” is a collection of audio albums that feature more than two dozen selections from the past 20 years. “Volume I” features repertoire for soprano, mezzo-soprano, and countertenor. “Volume II” is material for tenor and baritone. Both volumes are also available in CD and digital format from Bright Shiny Things.
BMP has also released “An Illustrated Retrospective: The First Twenty Years of Beth Morrison Projects.” The 500-page coffee table book documents every production created by Beth Morrison Projects or featured in the PROTOTYPE Festival over the last 20 years through photography, archival materials, interviews, and essays. An Illustrated Retrospective complements the audio recording and sheet music by preserving the history, imagery, people, productions, and institutional story surrounding the music. The book is published by Beth Morrison Projects and distributed by Just A Theory Press. Morcos Key is the designer.
“The Anthology opens up a huge new repertoire of contemporary opera works, providing access to music from some of today’s most influential composers in a form that can be used for auditions and performances; the arrangements can be played and brought to life by a vocalist and pianist, without the need for a full instrumental ensemble,” said collaborator Nathan Gunn in a press release. Gunn continued, “These volumes will be a boon to singers, voice students and voice teachers, delivering seminal works of the last 20 years into the hands of artists and practitioners, and making them part of a play-able repertoire.”
