Matthias Goerne, Guanqun Yi, Leo Nucci, Ying Huang Headline Shanghai Symphony Orchestra’s 2024-25 Season

The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra has unveiled its 2024-25 season. Here’s a rundown of vocal performances on offer.

The opening night showcase will be headlined by baritone Matthias Goerne in a program that includes works by Mozart, Wagner, Ma Sicong, Huang Yijun, Suppé, Sarasate, Tchaikovsky, and Mahler. Long Yu, Chen Xieyang, Cao Peng, and Hou Runyu conduct the concert which also features violinist Hilary Hahn and cellist Liwei Qin.

Performance Date: Sept. 6, 2024

There will be a “Puccini 100” celebration with soprano Ying Huang and tenor Shi Yjiie as the soloists. The program includes works by Puccini as well as Verdi and Rossini.

Long Yu conducts “Rigoletto” with Leo Nucci, Jinxu Xiahou, Guanqun Yi, Wei Wu, and Huilung Zhu as the soloists.

Performance Date: March 9 & 11, 2025

Matthias Goerne performs Mahler’s “Rückert Lieder” in a program also featuring works by Strauss and Beethoven. Charles Dutoit conducts.

Performance Date: April 19, 2025

Charles Dutoit conducts a Ravel program that also features the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Chorus.

Visiting Artists & Ensembles

The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra hosts the Cape Town Opera Chorus in “Horizons.”

Another visiting ensemble is the Gesualdo Six in its program “Fading.”
