Matthew Poelnzani has canceled the opening night performance of Tchaikovsky’s “Iolanta.”

The tenor announced via social media that he was ill and therefore would have to cancel.

“I am sorry to let you know that I have to cancel tonight’s performance of Iolanta at the Met due to illness,” he said. “I wish all of my colleagues a beautiful opening and hope to be well again for the next show”

As a result, the Metropolitan Opera announced that Alexey Dolgov will replace Matthew Polenzani.

Dolgov recently performed as Cassio in “Otello.”

He joins a cast that includes Sonya Yoncheva, Alexey Markov, Elchin Azizov, and Vitalij Kowaljow. “Iolanta” is paired with “Bluebeard’s Castle” which stars Gerald Finley.

Polenzani returns on Jan. 28, 2019.
