Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” is set to return to the silver screen on May 11.

The cast will include acclaimed soprano Asmik Grigorian and tenor Jonathan Tetelman as Pinkerton. The cast is rounded out by Elizabeth DeShong and Lucas Meachem as Sharpless. Xian Zhang conducts.

Regarding the opera, OperaWire noted, “Grigorian alone was enough cause for debut celebration, and she proved why with her performance.”

The Metropolitan Opera has presented “Madama Butterfly” 902 times and previously presented the opera in HD three times with sopranos Hui He, Kristine Opolais, and Patricia Racette in the lead role.

This year’s HD will be directed by Gary Halvorson, with countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo as host, providing exclusive behind-the-scenes access and conducting interviews with the cast and creative team during intermission.
