Maryland Opera Announces 17th Year of Free Summer Opera Camp

By David Salazar

Maryland Opera has announced the return of its Summer Opera Camp with in-person sessions held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Baltimore City from July 20 through August 9, 2026.

The camp is offered completely free of charge through donor support and is open to Maryland high school and college-age students up to age 21. Daily sessions include instruction in voice, drama, and opera coaching, as well as master classes and sessions in dance, movement, yoga, wigs, makeup, costumes, and stage combat.

The centerpiece of the program is a “Create & Produce” component in which campers learn how an opera comes to life while composing their own original work, which will be performed on Sunday, August 9 at 5pm at The Church of the Redeemer in North Baltimore.

“As Maryland Opera anticipates a new season highlighting the full spectrum of operatic performance, we remain committed to nurturing and supporting our young and spectacularly talented opera singers of the future,” said Camp Director James Harp, per an official press release. “Through this potentially life-changing program our young vocalists can envision their future and pursue their dreams.”

Campers will have the opportunity to perform at two additional Maryland Opera concerts at Boordy Vineyards on July 30 as part of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s SummerFest and again on August 7 for Maryland Opera’s First Fridays concert.

The camp will also include a movie night on Friday, July 24, with a free public screening of the 1984 film “Amadeus.”
