Maryland Lyric Opera & Opera San José Cancel Upcoming Productions

By Francisco Salazar

Maryland Lyric Opera and Opera San José have canceled upcoming performances due to the coronavirus.

The Maryland Lyric Opera said, “With sadness and regret, Maryland Lyric Opera has made the difficult decision to postpone the April 1, 2020 double bill performance of Puccini’s Il Tabarro & Gianni Schicchi. We depend on and have a deep commitment to an artistic and creative team who must travel to be with us and realize we cannot ask those colleagues to put themselves at risk in the midst of the current COVID-19 outbreak. MDLO Is investigating possibilities to reschedule this performance. For our patrons who have already purchased their tickets for the April 1 performance, MDLO will offer a full refund through the Strathmore Ticket Office.”

Meanwhile Opera San José released a statement that said it “has announced it will cancel all performances of Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute,’ its 2019-20 season finale at the California Theatre, due to rising concerns about limiting the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and in accordance with Santa Clara County’s ban effective midnight tonight on all events with more than 1,000 attendees.”

The company also announced that due to the many cancellations it will launch the OPERA SAN JOSÉ ARTIST AND MUSICIANS RELIEF FUND to help the company’s musicians, artists, and artisans who will be directly affected.

General Manager Khori Dastoor said, “I have spent the past few days in conversation with local artists and musicians whose livelihoods and security have been upended by this unimaginable crisis. As an incubator for world-class operatic talent, Opera San Josè’s mission is rooted in the support and development of the artists who make the Bay Area their home. We hope patrons will donate the cost of their cancelled tickets and/or make additional contributions to help create this emergency cash reserve that we will draw from in the months ahead to provide support to our musicians, singers, carpenters, stitchers, designers, and other hourly company members that make our productions possible.”

The USA is currently reporting over 1,200 confirmed cases of the coronavirus with 38 deaths.
