Giorgio Berrugi has canceled tonight’s performance of Verdi’s “La Traviata.”

The Lyric Opera of Chicago has announced that due to the flu, Berrugi will not be able to perform tonight. As a result, second-year Ryan Opera Center member Mario Rojas will sing the role of Alfredo.

Rojas made his Lyric opera debut as Borsa in “Rigoletto” during the 2017-18 Lyric Opera of Chicago. He has sung Don Ottavio in “Don Giovanni” and Julian in Tomás Bretón’s “La verbena de la Paloma.”

He is an alumnus of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and received the Plácido Domingo scholarship from SIVAM, Mexico’s most prominent young-artist program while also receiving the Marta Eggerth Kiepura Award in the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation International Vocal Completion.

He is also a third place winner in the Palm Springs Opera Guild Competition, the Emerging Singers Award in the Opera Index Vocal Competition, and an Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Western District Auditions.

The Lyric Opera’s run of “La Traviata” has suffered cancelations throughout its run with soprano Albina Shagimuratova canceling three performances. Shagimuratova returns to the run tonight joining Rojas and Željko Lučić.

La Traviata runs through March 22, 2019.
