Maria Teresa Leva & Dmytro Popov Jump In Deutsche Oper Berlin’s ‘Un Ballo in Maschera’

The Deutsche Oper Berlin has announced multiple cast changes for the performance of Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” on Dec. 29, 2021.

Per an official press release, tenor Dmytro Popov will replace Yusif Eyvazov in the role of King Gustavo III. Popov is a well-known tenor who has performed at the Metropolitan Opera House, Opéra National de Paris, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper, Wiener Staatsoper, Staatsoper Hamburg, Semperoper Dresden, and Staatsoper Unter den Linden, among others.

Additionally, Maria Teresa Leva will replace Irina Churilova in the role of Amelia. Leva is the second replacement for the role, as Churilova previously replaced Angela Meade for the performances on Dec. 20 and 22, 2021. Leva has appeared at the Palau de les Arts, Teatro Regio di Parma, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Fondazione Petruzzelli, Opéra Royal de Wallonie – Liège, Teatro Calderon, Opera di Genova, and Macerata Opera Festival, among many others.

Popov and Leva join a cast that includes Thomas Lehman as Count René Anckarström, Judit Kutasi as Ulrika Arvedson, and Heidi Stober as Oscar. The cast also includes Samueol Park, Patrick Guetti, Tyler Zimmerman, Jörg Schörner, and Ya-Chung Huang. Michelangelo Mazza conducts a production by Götz Friedrich.

Eyvazov is slated to go back to the stage for performances of Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades” at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in January and February 2022.
