Malin Byström, Gaëlle Arquez, Dame Sarah Connolly, Golda Schultz, Saimir Pirgu Headline Edinburgh International Festival’s 2024 Season
By David SalazarThe Edinburgh International Festival has unveiled its 2024 slate. Here is a rundown of the vocal performances on offer.
First up is the Scottish premiere of “La Pasión Según San Marcos” by Golijov. Joana Carneiro leads the Orquesta La Pasión and Musicians from the RSNO.
Performance Date: August 3, 2024
The formal opening the festival is a performance featuring the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Ryan Wigglesworth. The showcase features a presentation of Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion as arranged by Mendelssohn in 1841. Soloists include Elizabeth Watts, Dame Sarah Connolly, Laurence Kilsby, and James Atkinson.

Gaëlle Arquez, Saimir Pirgu, Elbenita Kajtazibi, and Jean-Fernand Setti star in the previously-announced “Carmen.” Louis Langrée conducts a production directed by Andreas Homoki.

Gaëlle Arquez to Headline ‘Carmen’ at Edinburgh International Festival 2024
María Guinard leads the Schola Cantorum de Venezuela in a program of works by Álvarez, Bilbao, López Gavilán, Ginastera, Grau, and Villa-Lobos, among others.

Jakub Hrusa leads the Bamberger Symphoniker and Edinburgh Festival Chorus in Dvorak’s “Te Deum” and Suk’s “Asrael.”

Golda Schultz stars in a concert version of “Così fan tutte” alongside Angela Brower, Hera Hyesang Park, Josh Lovell, Huw Montague Rendall, and Christopher Maltman. Maxim Emelyanychev will conduct and perform at the harpsichord.

The Scottish Opera presents “Oedipus Rex” in a production by Roxana Haines. Stuart Stratford conducts.

The Edinburgh Festival Chorus, under James Grossmith, presents Grechaninov’s “Passion Week.”
Performance Date: August 15, 2024
The Festival presents the Komische Oper Berlin’s production of “Le Nozze di Figaro” as directed by Kirill Serebrennikov. James Gaffigan conducts a cast starring Andrey Zhilikhovsky, Hubert Zapiór, Verity Wingate, Nadja Mchantaf, Siobhan Stagg, Penny Sofroniadou, Peter Kellner, and Tommaso Barea.

Sir Donald Runnicles leads the BBC Scottish Symphony in selections from Mahler’s “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9. The soloist for the Mahler selections is mezzo-soprano Annika Schlicht.

Santtu-Matias Rouvali leads the Philharmonia Orchestra and Edinburgh Festival Chorus in Verdi’s Requiem.

Thomas Quasthoff conducts 12 students in Rossini’s “Petite Messe solennelle.”

Closing the Festival is a concert performance of “Capriccio” under conductor Sir Andrew Davis. Malin Byström stars alongside Bo Skovhus, Sebastian Kohlhepp, Joshua Hopkins, Dame Sarah Connolly, and Peter Rose.
