Maggio Musicale Cancels Vladimir Spivakov’s Performance

By Francisco Salazar

The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino has canceled its April 28 concert with Vladimir Spivakov.

The company noted that the concert was set to feature the conductor and the Russian National Symphony at the Sala Zubin Mehta.

Audiences will either get a credit or a refund for the canceled performance.

The news comes as many companies are cutting ties with Putin-tied artists. Spivakov has been under fire for signing a letter in support of Vladimir Putin’s policies regarding the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea and Ukraine in 2014. In that year he was protested before a Boston concert at Emerson College. However, earlier in March 2022, he and other Russian artists signed a letter against the Russian invasion of Ukraine initiated by Putin.
