Madison Lyric Stage to Showcase World Premiere of ‘Elegy for a Fallen Angel’

By Nicolas Quiroga

Madison Lyric Stage is set to host the world premiere of artistic director Marc Deaton’s latest play, “Elegy for a Fallen Angel,” featuring original music composed by Nathaniel Baker, drawing inspiration from Purcell and Händel.

Scheduled for August 12 and 13, 2023, “Elegy for a Fallen Angel” features a cast of seven main performers, accompanied by a ten-member choir and a five-piece orchestra.

Madison Lyric Stage has previously introduced several of Deaton’s works, and “Elegy” takes the audience on a captivating journey into a fantasy realm inhabited by angels, demons, and monsters, exploring themes of child abandonment. The narrative centers around siblings Arielle and Uriel, as they embark on a journey after escaping their mother’s home.

“I am honored to be able to present this final work in what I think of as a trilogy of
plays that began with ‘Swan Knight’ over 10 years ago, continued through ‘A Memory of Truth?’ hree years ago, and now comes to completion with ‘Elegy for a Fallen Angel,’” said Deaton in an official press statement issued by the company. “All three plays are very personal to me and are reflective of my experiences growing up. I understand that the topics are difficult, but my hope is that my stories inspire others who have experienced abuse and trauma – and survived.”
