Lyric Unlimited To Present ‘Earth to Kenzie’

By David Salazar

The Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Lyric Unlimited is set to showcase “Earth to Kenzie” on Nov. 9 and 10, 2019.

The work tells the story of the titular fifth grader who escapes to the world of video games with her avatar Edwin to avoid many of the challenges she faces in the real world.

The opera, which is aimed at younger audiences, and written by composer Frances Pollock and librettist Jessica Murphy Moo, will be directed by Jess McLeod. This will be Pollock’s Lyric Opera debut after having composed such operas as “What Gets Kept,” “The Little Prince,” and “Stinney: An American Execution.” Murphy Moo will be returning to the Lyric after showcasing her talents with “An American Dream.”

Finally McLeod previously directed “Chicago Voices: Stories and Songs of Chicago” for Lyric.

The opera will also feature set design by Jeffrey D. Kmiec and costume design by Mieka van der Pleog.
