Lyric Opera of Melbourne Performs ‘Fly!’ About Aeronautical Engineer Lawrence Hargrave

By David Salazar

The Lyric Opera of Melbourne is currently presenting a production of “Fly!” at Fortyfivedownstairs in Melbourne, Australia.

The production opened on August 25, 2019 and runs through Sept. 1, with a cast that includes baritone Sam Roberts-Smith as neglected Australian aeronautical engineer Lawrence Hargrave and Carolyn Vercoe as Mrs. Hargrave.

The opera, which had its premiere back in 1984, was written by composer Barry Bonyngham with librettist Murray Copland. It celebrates the life and achievements of Lawrence Hargrave, whose discoveries enabled man to fly.

“Hargrave’s intriguing mind and observation of waves and the movement of wildlife led him to consider flight. Without him, there’s every chance man’s ability to fly would have happened much later than it did,” said Pat Miller, the company’s Artistic Director. “’Fly’ is Australia’s history turned into art through music, drama and design. We’re bringing audiences an immersive experience, in an intimate space, to tap into Hargrave’s mind. It is a performance not to be missed.”
