Lyric Opera of Chicago Reacts to Highland Park Mass Shooting

The Lyric Opera of Chicago has put out a statement in reaction to the shooting at Highland Park on July 4.

The company released a statement via social media noting, “The company members of Lyric Opera of Chicago are holding our neighbors in the Highland Park, Illinois community — and too many victims of tragic gun violence across our city, our region and the country — in our hearts this week.”

It added, “To directly support families of the deceased and wounded, please consider making a donation through the Highland Park Community Foundation at hpcfil.org.”

The company is one of the first to voice support against gun violence and added, “To learn more about what you can do to stop gun violence in your community, follow the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago and get involved at nonviolencechicago.org.”

On July 4, a mass shooting occurred during an independence parade leaving seven people dead and 46 others wounded by gunfire or the ensuing panic. According to Gun Violence metrics there have been an estimated 351 mass shootings in the US in 2022 to date, killing more than 400 people and injuring more than 1,300.
