Lucy Schaufer to Headline New Margaret Thatcher Opera by Dominic Sandbrook & Joseph Phibbs
By David SalazarThe first opera about Margaret Thatcher is in the works, courtesy of a team-up between historian & podcast host Dominic Sandbrook and composer Joseph Phibbs.
The work, titled “Mrs. T,” will focus on the Prime Minister’s 11 years in office between 1979-1990.
“Margaret Thatcher has been portrayed many times on screen, but never as Prime Minister on the operatic stage,” Phibbs told OperaWire regarding the opera. “More than the politics, this is an exploration of Thatcher the woman: her isolation in a world dominated by men; her often fractious relationships with members of her cabinet (notably with Geoffrey Howe); and the dramatic events that led to her resignation.”
The work will be directed by Lucy Bradley and will feature mezzo-soprano Lucy Schaufer in the lead role. Selections from the work will be presented in London in autumn 2025.
