Los Angeles Opera Reveals 3 Recipients of 2024 Stern Artist Award

By David Salazar

The Los Angeles Opera has announced that conductor Louis Lohraseb, director Kaneza Schaal, and administrator Patricia McLeod are the 2024 recipients of the Stern Artist Award.

For the award, $75,000 will be split amongst the three recipients.

Lohraseb is an alumnus of the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program and has conducted the LA Opera Orchestra in numerous performances. He also led productions at the Hamburg State Opera, Atlanta Opera, and Komische Oper Berlin, among others.

Meanwhile, Schall directed “Omar” and “Highway 1” at LA Opera and has worked with such organizations as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Opera, Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Kennedy Center, Detroit Opera, The Shed, Walker Arts Center and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

Finally, McLeod is responsible for the largest single gift in LA Opera history and has been with the company for 14 years.

“Over the years, Eva and I have been truly honored to get so know so many of the extraordinary artists who have created magical experiences in our theater,” said Marc Stern, the former Chairman of the company’s board of directors who established the award alongside Eva Stern, in an official press statement. “The Stern Artist Award is a way for us to celebrate how much they mean to us, to the company and to our community. This award recognizes artists with strong connections to LA Opera in an expression of admiration and gratitude for both past and future contributions to the company’s creative endeavors, and although the award has traditionally been given to artists, that description holds true for Patricia McLeod as well. I am delighted to recognize the inventive and committed manner in which she has created and maintained the ideal conditions for artistic expression on our stage.”

Stern was the Chairman of the board of directors between 2002-21 and is now Honorary Chairman.
