Los Angeles Master Chorale’s High School Choir Festival to Conclude with 26-School Virtual Day Concert

By Logan Martell

On April 23, 2021, the Los Angeles Master Chorale’s annual High School Choir Festival will hold a virtual festival day concert featuring high school students from 26 schools throughout southern California.

Now entering its 32nd year, the HSCF is one of the longest running arts education programs in the region, meant to further student’s understanding and appreciation of choral music through a year-long experience that culminates in the company’s festival day, traditionally held at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the HSCF has been redesigned with online webinars, masterclasses, and interactive Zoom sessions.

The virtual festival day video will see the students perform choral arrangements of Pharrell Williams’ “Happy,” Abbie Betinis’ “Resilience,” and Francisco Nunez’s “Es Tu Tiempo.” All performances will be led by Kiki & David Gindler Artistic Director Grant Gershon.

“There is great power and joy in the communal act of singing, even in a virtual world,” said Grant Gershon. “Adapting the High School Choir Festival for remote learning has provided a much-needed sense of belonging for high school students throughout the Los Angeles region while providing access to continued education in the arts, which has been proven to have a transformative impact, including contributing to one’s overall well-being.”
